BORACAY ISLAND

..is a small bone-shaped tropical island located approximately 200km South of Manila and 2km off the northwest tip of the mainland island of Panay in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, palm-studded island of Boracay - with its white, talcum-fine beach, balmy weather and warm, crystalline waters - is like a hypnotic magnet that lures many to a lotus existence. In this tiny, butterfly-shaped island at the northwestern tip of Panay in Western Visayas, days can be spent by simply lazing on the beach and nights are for indulging in the tropical party lifestyle. Boracay is an anchor tourist destination and one of the 7,000 times more islands that make up the Philippine archipelago.
..it's two primary tourism beaches, White Beach and Bulabog Beach, are located on opposite sides of the island's narrow central area. White Beach faces westward and Bulabog Beach faces eastward. The island also has several other beaches.

DINIWID BEACH, BORACAY

White Beach is the main tourism beach. It is a bit over four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, for about two kilometers, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it. North and south of the Beachfront Path, beachfront establishments do literally front along the beach itself. Several roads and paths connect the Beachfront Path with Boracay's Main Road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island. At the extreme northern end of White Beach, a footpath runs around the headland there and connects White Beach with Diniwid Beach
Bulabog Beach, across the island from White Beach, is a secondary tourism beach and Boracay's main windsurfing and kiteboarding area.

KALIBO, AKLAN
..Kalibo comes from the Aklanon word "sangka libo", ("one thousand"), the number of native (Ati aka aeta) people who attended the first Catholic Mass.

..it lies on the well-trodden path to Boracay and for most of the year is an uninteresting town.

..best known as the venue of the Ati-atihan festival, celebrated every every third Sunday of January it hosts what is probably the biggest street party in the country.

After this very first Mass, a celebration was held that was continued annually as the Ati-atihan festival. This exuberant festival celebrates the original inhabitants of the area, the Atis, and culminates with choreographed dances through the streets by locals daubed in black paint (Ati-Atihan means "to make like the Atis"). Revellers blacken their faces in imitation of their aboriginal forefathers and stage a shuffling dance in the streets amid cries of "hala bira, puera pasma" ("keep on going, no tiring")

..it is a compact place with most city destinations within walking distance. The major thoroughfare is Roxas Avenue, which runs into town from the airport in the southeast, with most streets leading off it to the southwest.

..a ten-minute tricycle ride into town from the airport costs around P10.

..Banks, including BPI and PNB, are on Martyr's Street, which runs along the southern edge of Pastrana Park, close to Kalibo Cathedral. The post office is in the Provincial Capitol Building, in Mabini Street, off Roxas Avenue.

Kalibo Airport
(IATA: KLO, ICAO: RPVK) serves the general area of Kalibo, the capital of Aklan province in the Philippines. The airport is classified as a secondary airport, or a minor commercial domestic airport, by the Air Transportation Office, a body of the Department of Transportation and Communications responsible for the operations of all airports in the Philippines except major international airports. It is the only domestic airport in the Philippines that serves international flights.

The airport is about ten minutes from the main plaza of Kalibo, and is one of two airports serving Boracay, the other being Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in the town of Malay

FYI
Domestic Airlines: Cebu Pacific, Phillipine Airlines, PAL Express, Zest Airways

Kalibo Cathedral

Originally built in 1581 and stands as the oldest edifice of worship in the province. It was renovated in 1993 through the spiritual and monetary help of the Aklanons. The church’s renovation designs are one of the last works of the renowned national artist Leandro V. Locsin.

Bakhawan Eco-Park

The multi-awarded and recipient of the Golden Eagle Award mangrove reforestation project boasts of an exceptional nature thrill for eco-tourists and visitors.

The 80+ hectare eco-park features a small park and recreation area and a 15-minute eco-walk built from bamboos stretching through the mangroves and out to a beach where one can enjoy a picnic with nature.

Sampaguita Garden
Aklan Sampaguita Gardens Resort, Inc. is the brainchild of Samuel John Butcher, an American artist and creator of Precious Moments artworks that promote messages of loving, caring and sharing. Mr. Butcher, who owns Precious Moments Park in Carthage, Missouri, put his plans into action in December 2001 and in June 2003, the resort began commercial operations.
Today, Sampaguita Gardens is recognized as a landmark in the Travel & Trade Industry, and provides employment for hundreds of Aklanons as well as training opportunities for Aklanons students and those from nearby provinces.
